Gallery 008 here, shows some of our fleet members.

The Raceboard fleet is delighted to welcome some new members to the fleet. Joe Taylor and William Lockett are now signing on and racing. No doubt next season they will be troubling the established fleet members in much the same way that Christian and then Lewis Barnes did (and still do in the case of Lewis) This influx of younger members into the fleet can only be described as "fantastic".

Fleet members were very saddened during September to hear of the death of Wendy Pullan. At her remarkable funeral our long time fleet member and many times past champion, her husband of over 50 years, John, led a celebration of her life in a most moving way. It was standing room only for Wendy! Their son, David, who learned to windsurf at the club some years ago also spoke, reminiscing about his Mum and moving everyone there with his memories. It is clear that she will be much missed by family and friends and it always strikes me at funerals how much one learns about people who have been familiar for years and yet about whom, we find we know so little. It was without question the "best" funeral I have ever attended! Well done John and David, you did her proud. (Robin Brown)

Julian is the first class captain of the 2011 season to submit series results to web admin. for publishing onto the site. He is using sailwave with the race parameters adjusted from the sailwave default in order to suit our series requirements. The Sunday and Wednesday series can be seen here.

Our 2011 West Midlands UKWA Open meeting and our Seavets Open meeting were joined together for the first time in an effort to make sure the number of entrants would be high enough to justify the event. This strategy appeared to work as we had a total of 22 entrants, the highest of any club open meeting in 2011 so far. A short video by Fran (or) Julian Barnes from the sailboard open meeting can be seen HERE

The event was held on Saturday 4th June in great conditions with a force 4 (ish) north easterly and plenty of sunshine at various times. See Seavets Chairwoman Ruth Tracey's Picasa album HERE. Results HERE. A Barnes video clip HERE

Notable snippets of club member news from the event.

Lewis barnes sailed in the unlimited or "open" category which had four other contestants. They were using 9.5 sq.m. sails whereas Lewis sailed with his usual 7 sq.m. Demon. He gave them quite a run for their money at times and although he came 5th he was awarded a special prize (box of chocs) for his fine effort. ~ His Dad, Julian, sailing in his first Seavets event and joining Seavets on the day, struggled with the testing conditions at times but managed a creditable 11th place overall in the feet of 15 Seavets. The 'vets were using their usual 7.5 sq.m. rigs. Julian was the one and only sailor in the Veteran category so won a "gold" medal at this, his forst event with Seavets. ~ Hugh Norris was sailing in the Megavet category of which there were two. He came 13th overall. ~ Robin Brown was sailing in the Supervets category of which there were eleven and he managed to put in the best Barnt Green performance coming 5th overall and in category and although this did not warrant a Seavets prize it was decided that this was the best BGSC performance of the day so the Windsurfing Worcester rose vase was presented to him, much to Sheila's delight as she is very fond of this vase.

We are expecting more pictures once those who took photographs get them to web admin.

Barnt Green Sailboarder conquers Mount Kilimanjaro

In early August Sailboard class member Greg Hunt, who can sometimes be seen out on his fun board, walked with Sian up Mount Kilimanjaro as part of an expedition to raise funds towards a project to restore the eight bells at the St Laurence Church in Alvechurch.  Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is 19,344 ft (5,895 m) high and is generally accepted as being the highest mountain in the world that you can ascend on foot without the need for any specialist climbing techniques. The mountain is nearly four miles high and the last 5,000 feet rise at an average gradient of 1 in 3 from the tropical plains of East Africa to the snows on the summit. What a fantastic achievement.

Spotted recently by a hawk eyed reporter, three key members of the Murky Drinkers Society, seen here holding their AGM. The three items on the agenda were : Is Murky good or very good? Have we time for another? Who's round is it anyway? Decisions : Very good, Yes and Jeff's. All were in favour, none against.  Cheers!

Update : Following his visit to hospital to be stitched up, Chris shows off his "cheeky grin" saying, "I'll be back on Sunday, nothing keeps me from my windsurfing!"

Shocking news, on Sunday 2nd December, the day to be known as Mega Windy Sunday, just after the start of the second race and overcome by the exitement of being in the lead, our erstwhile class captain, Chris Pack fell off in what must have been @ force 6 and was speared by his own board. Web Admin, says sorry Chris for persuading you to go for the one lap race option. A visit to hospital revealed that it was not as serious as it looked.

NEW WINDSURF FLEET GALLERY       Results   Sailboard. Sunday Summer Series

News in recently....The fleets old friend from many an open meeting, Richard Fincher, turned up on Sunday, 23rd, is he about to join I thought for a moment ?  In fact he had come to offer gear for sale, namely, wait for it (drum roll), an almost new Demon 7.5 with dedicated 5 m mast !!!  Well, Mr Pullan missed a bargain there I have to say and guess who snapped it up with a very hasty "I'll have it?"  Only our own newly nicknamed "Demon Denby" !!!  He then followed that up by buying Richards 6 m Tushingham storm sail too!  Richard left a very happy man,  John managed to rig the Demon just in time for the third race and then proceeded to have a very close battle with Brett in a F 3 gusting 4 southerly.  John beat Brett in the end but only because Brett went into multiple falling off mode!  John is on a new learning curve now.  The sail looks great and sets to a beautiful aerofoil shape.  He now has a nearly new MAC 7.5 for sale, offers around £100 please......Results for the morning  RB.1.1.1.  JD. 2.2.2.  BS. 3.3.3.  Allcomers / Rebecca 1.1.DNS.           (Posted by web admin. 23/9/07)

Posted by our Class Captain on Monday 17th September about Sunday 16th when it blew about F4 with strong gusts from the SSW...

"Hi Everyone,    I hope you have all recovered from yesterdays sailing. What a mornings racing that was! My blisters and bruises are now starting to subside.  I couldn't believe it!    It was really good to have 7 of us out on the water all having a real good go at taming the elements. Note though that I have a cunning plan in order for us to get closer to Robin. All we have to do is to master the gybing technique on this link.  It is an extract of a DVD. No need to buy the DVD because we think that the extract is enough in itself. Look at how easy it is to perform those perfect gybes! The clip is really good and will make you think how to do it better each time. If any of you can unlock the mystery and completely master it please teach me! I must admit that at one stage I tried to tack yesterday at number 8 but slipped up and ended up sat on the back of the board with my legs in the air still holding on to the boom trying to bring the bow around. Needless to say it didn't work out! Why do things like that always seem to happen in front of the viewing window of the club house?

It looked like everyone had a great time out there but I reckon you'll agree that probably the gutsiest performance of the day (if that is the correct word) was Rebeccas, in the second race. Fantastic determination !"                      Regards,                 Chris

Latest BGSC Sailboarders news, posted late July, is that Rick Parfitt and Brett Stevenson have bought RACEBOARDS with 7.5 Mac Sails ! Our fleet is expanding again !

Summer 2007 report by Chris Pack, Class Captain, posted 11th July.

The Summer Series is developing nicely for the Sailboarders. It began with Robin taking most of the victories but having to work extremely hard with stiff competition from Hugh, Jeff, Bill John Denby and myself. Competition has been so fierce at times with many races going right down to the wire with literally inches determining first and second places. In the past three weeks John Pullan has returned (welcome back John) after an enforced lay off and has literally thrown his gauntlet down by taking 5 wins in his first 6 races. Robin, the pressure is well and truly on!

Conditions so far this season have been mixed. It has been great to sail in a virtually full lake and we’ve experienced both global warming and also the coming of the next ice age, everything from good winds to becalmed days with temperatures from sweltering (in April!) but having to wear winter wetsuits and experiencing freezing cold hands at the end of May.

The Early Wednesday evening series looks set to go to Robin following some really consistent sailing. We are managing to get at least two windsurfers out on the water on Wednesday evenings and occasionally up to four.

NICOLA GRANGER RECEIVING HER PRIZE FROM ROBIN BROWN

The latest round of the United Kingdom Windsurfing Association (Midlands Region) was successfully hosted by Barnt Green Sailing Club on Saturday  June 2nd. Eighteen junior and adult windsurfers from all over the Midlands including four local Barnt Green sailors competed over a series of five races in light South Westerly winds.    The visiting sailors took the major titles. In the juniors Nicola Granger came first in the 7.8 Techno class and Matt Brown took the 6.8 title. In the adult competition Bob Ingram won the unlimited sail size Race board category and overall adult competition. Mike Playle from Hollowell Sailing Club won the 7.5 Race board class followed by two B.G.S.C. members Chris Pack in second and Robin Brown third.

The intense competition was not just limited to the front of the fleet, the Barnt Green contingent also fought it out between them with John Pullan initially staking his claim for first Barnt Green Sailor until gear failure forced him to retire in race 2. Subsequently Robin, Brett and I battled it out throughout the day. Unbelievably I managed to win the Barnt Green Vase. Thanks Robin and John, I promise to take good care of it until either of you win it back again next year! The real find of the day though was Brett who actually sailed a Race board for the first time ever and competed fantastically well making the rest of us fight for our places in every race. Well done Brett. A big thank you must also go to everyone in the duty team led by Brian Allen in making the day run smoothly. Thanks for giving up your time to support this event.

Did you know that you can keep informed of weekly results, view open meeting pictures etc on our website? Just click on to www.sailingbarntgreen.com and check out the Sailboard fleet and results pages. (Ed. Of course you knew, you are on here reading this)  Note that Board Wise in Cannock have paid £50 towards sponsoring our website and these fleet pages. Click the links to their site to see their stock and I hope you will support them when you need to buy gear. Finally, the most important event of the season has recently taken place between two members of the sailboard fleet and that is the marriage of Brett and Rebecca. Congratulations and best wishes to you both.

It has been an eventful season so far !                                                                 Chris Pack

A message from Chris Pack, Class Captain.  Posted 23rd May 2007.

Hi Everyone
Please note two very important dates which are coming up very soon, in your diary.

Saturday 2nd June - Barnt Green Sailboard Open. Come and do battle in the 7.5m fleet. Maximise the number of Barnt Green boards on the water and try and take home the 1st Barnt Green Sailor trophy.

Saturday 9th June - Barnt Green Seavets Open. Still competitive but a very enjoyable event. By competing you will be contributing to 'Research in to Ageing' (something we are all going to benefit from one day!)
(Sorry Brett but you are too young to compete in Seavets. Minimum age is 35. I think that the rest of the circulation list just about qualify though!)

Lets show our strength, in numbers at least, in these two events! Ten of us on the water on the 2nd June and  9 on the 9th June would be fantastic.
Robin - Any chance of Matthew sailing on the 2nd to make it 11 Barnt Green sailors?!

Hope you can all make it.
                 Regards,                                            Chris

Recent news, John Pullan came back to racing with a vengeance this week end, 20/5/07, after his enforced rest and winter layoff. With the changeable wind fluctuating between zero and very slight and changing direction by 180° several times per race you would think that those who had already had plenty of practice might forge ahead, but no, not to be, John's mastery of light and variable was evident from the beginning and the headline in this weeks "Standard" is likely to read "Pullan Pulverises Pack and Brown".   Welcome back John, well done and Grrrrr.

Final 2006 season report by Chris Pack, Class Captain

By the time you see this report we will be well into another exciting (and hopefully not too cold!) Frostbite series. To begin with and most importantly, I would like to welcome Piers Allott as our latest new member to the fleet. I know that we are all looking forward to seeing you out on the water on your Raceboard, hopefully before the end of the season?!

Well despite being down on numbers due to various other conflicting commitments, I hope you agree that it has been a good season with great conditions, particularly earlier on and also, some tremendously competitive sailing throughout. Hopefully everyone enjoyed their time out on the water.

It was good to see Tim, Rick Parfitt, Brett and Rebecca battling pretty successfully against strong winds on their all-comers boards during the season. Tim was seen swapping over to a larger sail on several occasions, even when it was blowing hard! Well done Tim.

In the Raceboard fleet John, Robin, Jeff  and myself were locked in combat over many weeks with Hugh, Bill, John Denby, Matthew and George turning up as time permitted to greatly intensify the competition.  In the end though, the Trophies went to their usual homes and the rest of us need to regroup and work out a winning strategy for 2007!John won the Gordon & Rosalie Summer points series with Robin coming a very close second. The competition between them went right down to the wire. Robin won both the early and late Wednesday Evening Series, and also came out on top in last years frostbite. Congratulations to John and Robin.

John and Robin battling it out as usual, the result was decided by using the tie break rule.

(See Archive page) In addition we successfully hosted a Seavets prime event in June with 17 entrants. (See Seavets page)

Hope to see you out on the water in the Frostbite series.

Chris Pack ( Class Captain. Sailboards. BGSC )
