Andrew Ritchie and Arthur Mason hold on to title, just........

The Enterprise Association Under 21’s National Youth Championships were held at Barnt Green Sailing Club on  8/9th September. The weekend produced some very tight racing in good sailing conditions. On conclusion of the first day and after 3 races, there were three different winners making it all to play for in the final two races on the Sunday. In the fourth race, the lead boat for the entire race (Andrew Ritchie & Arthur Mason) failed to cover their position from the final mark and subsequently lost the race to Richard Pepperdine and James Askew  by half a boat length. On the final race, exactly the same error was made but in reverse which presented Ritchie and Mason with the race and the Championships.

From the host club, Katy Hall won 1st Lady Helm and the Club sailors; Joe Taylor, Sam Evans, Katie Smith, Katy Hall, Sam Woods and Victoria Woods as a group, achieved first Club with more than 3 boats in the Competition with the best results overall.  Photo courtesy of  Bob Southworth.

Enterprise Speed Sails U21 Championship 2007.  Full report..........

Held under the burgee of Barnt Green Sailing Club from 8 – 9 September . Andrew Richie and Arthur Mason retain their U21 Championship title. They are the Enterprise U21 Champions – Congratulations for winning this very competitive, entertaining race.  Richard Peperdine and James Askew were on equal points with our champions.  The championship was decided on Andrew Richie and Arthur Mason coming first in the last race – it could not have been closer!.

 Race 1
12 boats lined up for the first race of the Enterprise U21 Championship.  Early leaders were Matt Johnson & Rachel Jackson, closely followed by Andy Ritchie & Arthur Mason; these positions remained for the first two laps. Andy & Arthur eventually overtook Matt & Rachel and throughout the third lap the positions alternated several times. On the final leg a tacking match developed between Andy/Arthur, Matt/Rachel & Richard Pepperdine/James Askew, who had worked their way up the fleet. At the finish it was Andy/Arthur who took the gun followed by Rich/James with Matt/Rachel finishing in third.

Race 2
Race 2 started in similar conditions with Matt & Rachel leading at the first mark with Rich /James in close pursuit. The fleet bunched together on the run with Rich/James  emerging leaders at the bottom mark. A shifty beat followed with Andy/Arthur pulling through to second place. As the race progressed Rich/James extended their lead with Paul Nuttall & Charles Bower gaining second place at the end of the final turn. A tight race was developing for second with Alex Stubbs & Hannah Adams holding a narrow lead over Andy/Arthur. At the finish, Rich/James took the gun with Andy/Arthur second . Third place was Paul/Charles after a close finish. Matt/Rachel gained fourth.

Race 3
Race 3 was the first race of the day to be held in sunshine, a consistent Force 3. Andy/Arthur led at the first mark, second Rich/james , third Matt/Rachel.  Richard did a 720 and there were place changes. On the run Matt/Rachel took the lead which they maintained to the finish.  Second was Andy/Arthur, third Alex/Hannah, fourth Dominic and Josh White, fifth Rich/James, sixth Paul/Charles.  This concluded a very competitive day which saw a different winner in each race.

Race 4
Sunday morning, race 4 was sailed in light winds – Force 2 and dry.  After the start Matt/Rachel and Alex/Hannah tacked onto port.  Alex/Hannah led at the first mark, second Andy/Arthur, third Matt/Rachel, and fourth Richard/James.  On the next leg Alex/Hannah let themselves get covered and went from first to fifth.  Andy/Arthur ceased the opportunity.  Matt/Rachel shot from fourth to second but were challenged for water at the windward mark by Alex/Hannah meanwhile Richard/James past both of them.  On the second lap at the windward mark Andy/Arthur led, second Richard/James, 3rd Dominic/Josh, fourth Matt/Rachel and fifth Alex/Hannah.  This order remained with Andy/Arthur maintaining a substantial lead.  During the last lap Richard/James sailed excellently to apply pressure to Andy/Arthur.  On the final beat Richard Made the most of a wind shift, winning by half a boat length.

Race 5
Matt/Rachel led at first mark after a very close beat.  Second was Richard/James, third Andy/Arthur.  At the top of the second beat a freak gust caught the leader Matt/Rachel unawares resulting in a spectacular capsize dropping them to the back of the fleet and allowing Andy/Arthur to take the lead  closely followed by Richard/James.  Richard/James continued to put pressure on  Andy/Arthur and Dominic/Josh stayed in a steady third place.  On the second lap Richard/James took advantage of   a wind shift to take the lead but Andy./Arthur soon regained the lead and then continued to play ‘cat and mouse’ with the lead changing several times.  Matt/Rachel sailed brilliantly to move up to fourth place.  Dominic/Josh sailing steadily in third.  On the last beat Richard/James rounded first and held a port tack on the right hand side of the course.  Andy/Arthur followed three boat lengths behind and tacked onto starboard..  He held this for ten boat lengths tacking back onto port on the inside of a large shift.  Richard/James tried to establish the cover but failed to cross.  Andy/Arthur went on to win the race and the event.

This event was concluded with an excellent Prize Giving with thanks going to The Race Officer Bob Sugget, Sally and the galley team, Adrian Savage and all the members of the Barnt Green Sailing Club who had helped to make this such an enjoyable, completive event in a great social environment.
