Feature : From the 2007 Autumn newsletter "Bittell Banter" Caroline Whitehouse, our recent adult training co-ordinator wrote this piece on Adult and Powerboat training :-  She will be running a number of our courses however.

Having spent five years working as a Dinghy and Powerboat Instructor in various locations in the Mediterranean, I returned to the Midlands 2 years ago and landed with a bump. I really missed the seasonaire lifestyle and especially being by the water. So at the beginning of this year when I was running a Dinghy Instructor Course at Frampton on Severn, I suddenly had a yearning to get back into racing Dinghy's. One of the course candidates was selling what he described as a "Fast" Ent. He was a great salesman with extreme persuasive powers and talked me into buying his boat to sail with my novice partner, William. I decided to join the club which would have pleased my late grandfather who had been a BGSC member some 20 years previously. On joining the Club, I was approached by the Commodore to help with the training and I have spent the summer running RYA power boat level 2 and safety boat courses.

Despite this summer being the worst one for years, every date we scheduled for the powerboat courses, we have had nothing but glorious sunshine. The courses have been very well attended and we have seen a great diversity in different water uses enrolling on the powerboat level 2 Course at the Club. Having people from different backgrounds has led to much group discussion regarding a variety of scenarios.

Preparing sailboards for taking to shore after picking up the sailors

Not only have we trained a large number of club members, who I hope to see testing their skills when rescuing me from my Enterprise over the stormy winter months to come, but we have also trained corporate and voluntary organisations. These include rescue teams from SARA (Severn Area Rescue Association) who have had a busy summer bailing Worcestershire out of flood water and no doubt bringing much relief to families and homes affected, BRATs (Birmingham Running and Triathlon Club) who are the nutters who risk their life and limbs swimming in the pike infested waters every Thursday night and a group from Cemex, who struggled with the kill cord, or Death Rope as they termed it and are responsible for surveying quarries throughout the midlands.

I enjoyed my first summer training at the club and would like to thank everyone who gave up some of their precious time to come and develop a new and valuable skill. It is important for us to remember that a powerboat is a lethal piece of equipment.

If anyone is interested in power boat courses in the future then please get in touch with me, my contact details at the top of this piece.
