Oppies approaching a mark (left) while kids in Pico's receive intensive instruction (right) The club is very keen to ensure that it provides training for juniors, in a safe and fun environment. We are a recognised RYA Training Centre and RYA Volvo Champion Club. Our training is based on the RYA Young Sailors scheme syllabus, using qualified instructors, and takes place both on and off the water with regular debriefs. These courses are for children aged 6 to 16 years and are open to both members and non-members. We try to ensure that we cater for a wide range of abilities, from complete beginners to sailors competing at national competitions. The club has a training fleet of Optimists, cadets and Pico’s so it is not essential that you have your own boat.
The main training activities are 3 day events at the Easter and August Bank Holidays and then a series of Sunday Morning training sessions during late spring and the start of the summer. This Sunday Morning training, known as "K8's Crew", is designed to build on skills learnt at Easter Training and help children to gain in confidence be able to start joining in with club racing. The dates are published at the beginning of each year following the first committee meeting. (Run by Kate Hall and Kate Smith) K8's Crew page here The club also organises training for adults members at various times and details will be posted on the website when available. The Adult/Senior training Co-ordinator is Mike Powell. A volunteer is required for this post, please contact Mike if you are interested in helping.
It is important that parents also start to learn what sailing is all about so we ask that someone with parental responsibility is always at the club during the training.
Mike Powell is also the Junior Training Co-ordinator
Easter Training held on 9th, 10th and 11th April. Report on Easter Training : The weather was great for the three days of training this Easter, with light winds, sunny spells and generally warm. Forty four juniors had great fun sailing Optimists, Cadets, Pico’s and Lasers. Some learned the basics, others honed their racing skills, while parents relaxed in the sun. The instructors, headed by Senior Instructor James Hall, provided excellent tuition for six groups, including lots of games on the last day when the wind almost completely died! Everyone enjoyed the atmosphere and facilities at the club, not in the least because the Galley provided breakfast and snacks throughout the day. There were eighteen non-member juniors attending, with some new members joining following the course. Thanks to everyone who contributed towards the success of the event. Mike Powell. Junior Sail Training Principal A report on the August Junior Training held on 27th, 28th and 29th August.
