Solo’s; 50 Years Young....... (from the 2006 season)Twenty boats entered the summer class races with turnouts of up to nine making for a lot of closely contested races. Just how close, well just two points nett was the margin between the first three Brian, Bob and Tim at the close. Special applause goes to Keith in his debut season, taking 6th in class and first place in the handicap! This year, the Solo’s celebrated their 50th anniversary and the Nationals at Richard Ash - Class Captain. Solo Class Captain’s Report April 2006 Saturday April 1st delivered a challenging wind for the Solo Open Meeting. There was a Barnt Green contingent of eight out of the 23 boats – More than one third of the entry. The conditions remained challenging and the fleet was reduced in number as the day progressed, yours truly being one of the earliest to fall by the wayside. Only seven boats completed all three races but I congratulate those who managed even one race. Congratulations to Bob Suggitt who finished as first Barnt Green Sailor in the meeting. Thank you to all those who entered the meeting in such trying conditions and with such stiff competition – Bob Suggitt, Tim Joinson, Tim Jobson, Philip Everard, Russell Lewis, Kate Brooks & Richard Ash. My special thanks to the whole OOD Team for the meeting lead by Merlyn Wilcox and also to those helping behind the scenes in the galley and bar.
Now well under way, the season progresses well and we have 17 Solo Sailors listed. I welcome Simon Woods and Paul Swinnerton both as yet without a Solo at the time of writing and also our latest recruit, Keith Heyes who now has a boat but awaits warmer water before launching! I now have a more up to date boat and hope to prove that my previous lack of success is not down to “the nut on the tiller”. Hopefully improving air and water temperatures will see an increase in the Solo turnout for club racing to provide more of a challenge for the hardier sailors in the fleet. Perhaps now is the time that I should implement my own suggestion and get out there more and sail. I now pass the Solo Class Captaincy into the capable hands of Richard Ash. I am sure that Richard will champion the Solo Fleet to further success and continue to build on the reputation of the club as a welcoming host to visiting Solo sailors at our annual Solo Open Meeting. Perhaps he will also be able arrange for some slightly more moderate weather for the next Open Meeting. Thank you for your support and please support Richard as you have me. Just for fun - Understanding Engineers! To the optimist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be. Happy and Successful Sailing Chris Stringfellow (Recently retired as Class Captain)
Report on Solo Open Meeting National Solo Class Association, Traveller Series Solo Open Meeting at Barnt Green SC, A gusty south-westerly wind force four gusting to five welcomed 23 boats to the meeting. Race one saw a general recall but with a clean restart Jim Hunt ( In increasingly gusty conditions, 16 boats started race two and again Hunt took an early lead but Brown took the lead by the end of lap three with Colin Newton (Staunton Harrold SC) maintaining a solid third throughout with Stuart Hydon (Shustoke SC) & Neil Wilkinson (Shustoke SC) rising to fourth & fifth respectively. Hunt & Brown engaged in battle of covering on the last but one leg although a gust caught Brown tacking off after the final mark of the shortened course for Hunt to slip through to first at the anchor dragging boat finish. Race three saw 11 boats at the start. Without Hunt in the race Brown took an early lead but Hydon took over in lap three with Byrd astern followed by Clarke, Wilkinson & Brown
