Laser Fleet Report – Autumn / Winter 2007
This year started off with strong winds and an influx of new members, how great it was to see the number of boats on the water grow week by week over the summer, it can’t have had much to do with the British summer weather this year! When I said earlier this year that I would take over the role of class captain I did not anticipate the growth of the class that has occurred, all I can see is this being a benefit for the fleet not only in the numbers now racing week in, week out but also the experience brought into the club by new members. As it comes to the end of the summer season the sailing will only get better, over the last few years the wind and weather throughout the winter have been the best of the year. Hopefully the trend can continue this year and we can have another great series in the autumn and winter sunshine. It will be great to keep the numbers high over the winter so I really do encourage some of the newer members to keep sailing over the next few months, it will be great experience for you.
I have had some interest from members about the possibility of organising some race training. I would be very willing to help with this and as I can imagine other more experienced members would also. If we can get enough interest through the training coordinator, Karen Millington, or myself, I am sure we can organise some training either through the winter or at the start of next season. There have been an increasing number of members taking their boats away from the club and posting results on the regional and national circuits. The most notable performance again comes from Rory Jones. The progression that he has made this year has been outstanding and this culminated over the summer with an outstanding result at the national championships. Rory was leading the fleet going into the final day only to be beaten into 4th overall. Very well done Rory. Closer to home on the Midland Grand Prix series Russell Lewis, pictured left, completed 11 races this year finishing in 8th place overall. His notable results being 3rd places at Trimpley and
Laser Fleet Report – Spring/Summer 2007 Welcome from your new fleet captain and what can I say but it is great to see the class growing week by week. Although I have not been around the club recently the vast improvement within the class is definitely noticeable. Not only is the standard of sailing ever improving also the number of boats on the water is definitely a pleasing sight to see, I think without a doubt the laser class has the highest average number of boats on the water so far this season. If I have not done so already I would like to say welcome to all the new laser sailors to the fleet, I believe it is great not only for the fleet but also for the club to have the influx of new junior and youth members. We have all noticed your competitiveness on the water and it in turn improves the quality of the whole fleet. With my busy university schedule I have been unable to attend many events away from the club this year. There have been notable results to date though especially from one of our newer members Rory Jones. He has been competing in the Laser 4.7 ladder events with a 4th at Draycote, 8th at Other results away from the club include local open meetings from Russell Lewis with two 12th positions at Chelmarsh and Earlswood and a very impressive 4th at the home open. Moving onto the Laser open held at Barnt Green Sailing Club on Saturday – 21st April 2007, a short report is given on a great day’s sailing with some good conditions at times. 12 visitors and 9 home sailors sailed three races in a force 3 wind from the south.
