Barnt Green Sailing Club - Gallery 035 The first beat of the 2010 Under 21 Enterprise National Championship held on 4/5 September. Sponsored by Noble Marine
In addition, great thanks must be also be given to all those who assisted in the weekend, from the OD teams, Rescue teams, Galley and Bar staff. It was a tremendous effort with a lot of hard work, but I hope rewarding and with the appreciation of the visitors, giving you a pride in the Club. Well done. Read the report on the Yachts & Yachting website. To provide Club Members with the opportunity to sail on Sunday afternoon, we ran a Charity race in aid of RYA Sailability, an Organisation that promotes sailing for the disabled. The winner of the senior fleets was Rob Lennox, the Junior fleets, Hannah Lennox and the sailboarders, Lewis Barnes. A cheque of £40.00 has been sent off to the RYA. And now, from Rob Farquharson, Enterprise Class Captain, who organised the BGSC part of the event. Here is a quick summary of this weekend's Enterprise U21 National Championships hosted at BGSC, from a Barnt Green perspective. We had good sailing conditions overall. I was heartened on Thursday by the BBC weather forecast giving confimation of the weather I had ordered, showing a forecast of nice sunshine and winds of around 12mph. Like most forecasts though reality was not quite the same. Saturday was a very pleasant day but the winds lightened during the day rather than strengthening, and on Sunday morning I got very wet in the rescue boat from the rain, which was definitely not on the order! Still, the sailing was good and competition fierce. We had 24 boats entered this year which was a great result and 1 more than last year. Of these we had 7 Barnt Green boats, which was a great turnout, and considering that none of them are regular Enterprise sailors the results were very good. Bob Suggitt, Race Officer for the weekend, had very varied winds to cope with in course setting. Many thanks to him and his race control/safety boat teams for running such an excellent regatta. Notable honours were Rory Jones and Rachel Lennox (in the Savage's boat) who were the best BG boat and achieved 6th place overall, and Charli Lennox and Heather Jones (in Merlyn's boat) who took the prize for best Lady Helm, and were 11th overall. Once again the club became a campsite, with tents put in some quite surprising places as well as the obvious flat ground at the front of the clubhouse and boathouses. Saturday night was a fun afair with a good crowd that was well behaved. From what I understand the average age of competitors was lower this year (and behaviour correspondingly quieter!) The biggest hiccup of the weekend though was the Weatheroak Draft Real Ale running out before 9pm on Saturday as it was so popular, much to the disappointment of many punters, so there will be much pressure for 2 barrels next year!
A huge thank you to all those who helped over the weekend, particularly those helping in the galley with the mammoth job of catering for all our guests. Thanks too to those who lent their boats out to make the racing possible. Rob Farquharson, Class Captain - Enterprise Fleet - BGSC.
