Barnt Green Sailing Club - Gallery 030 Photo's taken on 28/1/2010, another Snowflake Race day cancelled due to ice. Scroll down to small images and click on each one to open a larger version. Taken by Robin Brown ('Phone Camera) at @ 14.30 to 15.00
Three swans walking across the ice from pool to pool, often using ice breaking technique, to reach a large enough expanse of open water to take off. This they found in the lee of the dam which gave them about 200 metres of head to wind "runway" into a north westerly. We observed that their "paddling" technique during initial acceleration required water , not ice, to work. The whole exercise, from the far pool of water to take off, took about half an hour. Gordon, Chris, Stuart and Mike study the poor old TOD committee boat, in need of some repair before the season. In picture two it suddenly struck me, it is our version of "I know my place" with roles reversed and we have four, not three as in the original. From the left, Commodore, Vice Commodore, ex Commodore and Rear Commodore. The annual pre season meeting with members of the BRATs triathlon swim training sub Committee took place but not before Megan and Tauny (very important BRAT's) turned down an invitation to take a dip for some early training. Chris, Gordon and Robin are the BGSC sub Comm. Views across the partly frozen lake. The race officer, Rob Lennox, had an easy day! Three days lost to ice so far this Snowflake. Ice sculptures, each finger of ice is a blade of grass. To put the ice sculptures into perspective, it's the overflow from the Ram Pump. The Dinghy park, clear of snow, unlike the iced lake. Web.
