2008 Class Captain is Mike Pickworth Tel. 01905 774588 or click  EMAIL

2006/7  Class Captain was Adrian Savage

28th August 2007. Herewith the current state of play in the Enterprise points series.
Mike Pickworth is the only one on minimum points thus far with 16 bullets out of 25 races sailed. Gordon has 7 firsts of 31 sailed. I have 5 of 18 races.  Only 4 of us have made the 15 races to avoid counting discards that is Mike, Gordon, myself and Stuart. Phil Everard needs 3 more races,   Richard and Jill Easton need 6, Caroline Whitehouse needs 8, Roger and Sally Ellis need 9 and Merlyn Wilcox and Dick Wallace 10.

I make there to be 5 more Sundays or a total of 10 races to go
weather permitting. I suspect that Mike's position is now
unassailable, but in the points, 2nd and 3rd are still very much open
and of course, the glassware is just as good quality for the handicap
prize as for the points series and these prizes are very much up for
grabs. Looking forward to seeing you all on the water.

best  wishes                                                                                 Adrian Savage

Summer 2007 report

Its good to see the pond remaining full, but unfortunately this was at the expense of the 18 boats that took to the water on May 13 for the Enterprise open.  More water fell that day than could be reasonably expected in a tropical storm.  Boats were seen heeling and setting their sails to make propulsive use of the downpour.  It didn’t seem to help me much.   Notwithstanding this, a good day was had by all who admitted to having had a good day.  Chief amongst these was Nigel Allis from Tamworth who came out of open meeting hibernation to snap up the prestigious Silver Enterprise Trophy and John Blundell from Hallamshire who won the Trophy race in a boat regrettably sold to him by your fleet captain last year.  Bob and Mandy were the 1st Barnt Green boat.  Steve Cumley did an amazing job in race organisation, making best use of the wind on the pond to give as fair a series of races as was possible.  Many thanks to all who were kind enough to offer their help, particularly Sally and her Galley team, Stuart and Christine for presenting the prizes, the OOD team, Tim and Keith and the rescue team, Trish and Ray and George and Katy who also did the results, and of course Bill Tucker who manned the bar.

Many of you will have noticed the Enterprise boat park to have filled up nicely.  We have some very welcome additions to the fleet.  Caroline Whitehouse has sailed twice on Sunday and won both her races. I expect to see much of her boat’s transom over the summer.  Welcome also to James Frost and family.   In general, the Enterprises have had a bit of a slow start to the Sunday series.  Currently in the lead is Gordon and Rose who have missed only 4 of a possible 20 races on Sundays.

Mike Pickworth and Stuart Howe are in hot pursuit.  There are around 60 races throughout the summer and any who make the 15 races needed to qualify are very likely to take home a prize on the second of November. Very good for impressing the friends and neighbours.  While it is still a longish way away, the Club is hosting again the Under 21 Enterprise National Championship on the 8th and 9th September.  This has turned out to be a very sociable occasion.  Last year, we ran out of all spirits and blew the speakers and amplifier of the music system at the party on the Saturday night.  Any who wish to join in by offering their services on the OOD team, in the rescue boats or behind the bar please give me a call.  I’m expecting Bob Suggitt to OOD the event and lead the dancing as per last year.  While you’ve got your diaries out, the Enterprise Christmas Party will be on 1st December.  I hope to attend this as an ordinary sailor as Mike Pickworth has kindly agreed to take over as fleet captain at the AGM.  However, as the AGM is 3 days before the party, I am sure that both of us will be involved in the organisation and we will plan a feast and a selection of ‘entertainments’ that I’m sure you won’t want to miss.  To qualify, all you need to do is sail an Enterprise as helm or crew once in the year and regular members of the fleet can of course invite their friends.

ENTERPRISE CLASS REPORT  AUTUMN / WINTER 2006 / 7

First the GOOD NEWS.  The  ENTERPRISE XMAS PARTY IS ON SATURDAY 2ND DECEMBER.  This year we are having an outside caterer to provide the usual splendid feast so that we can welcome Sally and Steve Hall as our guests of honour for all their hard work and support with events over the last year.  All the usual ‘entertainments’ will be provided after the supper.  This year numbers are strictly limited so only the first 5000 will be able to get tickets.  I’m hoping that the 5 loaves and 2 cod fish fingers will go around OK.

Next, MORE GOOD NEWS.  This November we are hosting the Enterprise Association Midlands AGM.  This will take the form of the usual Frostbite sailing but with added Enterprises.  Following this, Sally is doing a LUNCH at £6 per head.  So, don’t put your Ent away for the winter just yet, polish its bottom and bring it out for the racing and social on the 19th November.

The summer series is over and in the Enterprise fleet there were a total of 23 Boats which sailed the 58 possible races.  Four helms completed the 15 races required to make a series as follows:

The average number of boats out per race was 4, the maximum being 8.

All in all, I think that this shows that the Enterprise fleet had a pretty good summer on the water.  With regards to the results, the points series was very closely fought between Mike Pickworth and myself who tied for first place, the tie being broken not by the number of wins which was even between Mike and myself for the races that we both sailed but by the number of second places!  In the handicap trophy, the battle was between Gordon and Stuart.  Their handicap rating was the same so Gordon and Rose did well to stay ahead.

This year, not many Barnt Green Enterprises ventured away from the club.  However, a record (for recent years) number (3) of Barnt Green boats made the pilgrimage to Looe in Cornwall for the 50th Anniversary World Championship.  The star of the week was Bob Suggitt who won the Veterans trophy in very testing conditions and finishing 38th overall despite loosing a day’s sailing because of a king pin support breakage.  The weather was sunny, the food fabulous, the beer excellent and the wind howling.

The following week saw three Barnt Green Boats at the Salcombe Yacht Club regatta.  The winds veered to east and lightened for this week, making some very testing racing, particularly in the narrows opposite the town where many places were won and lost (mainly lost says Phil) on the wind shifts.  Philip and Lynn Everard came 14th with creditable performances from Richard and Jill Easton and Roger and Sally Ellis.

In addition to the Club open meeting, Barnt Green played host to the Enterprise Under 21’s National Championship on the weekend of the 2nd / 3rd September.  The Youth Championships this year were sailed in strong winds providing the rescue crews with lots of work. Unfortunately for Thomas Gillard and James Wright who were in the lead after the last mark, a capsize on the way to the finishing line lost them both the race and the regatta to Andrew Ritchie and Arthur Mason.

Andrew Ritchie & Arthur Mason (20673)    Thomas Gillard & James Wright (22918)

There were 4 Barnt Green Boats entered in this regatta providing some fun for the sailors and worry for the boat’s owners.  The party on Saturday night was said to be awesome (says Bob Suggitt , OOD for the event).    Link here to gallery 1 of the event and here to gallery 2

A big thank you from me to all who have helped to make the Enterprise sailing this year so good, particularly those who helped with the OOD teams for the open and Under 21s and with rescue duties and the galley / social arrangements for these events.                                      Adrian Savage – Fleet Captain

2006 ENTERPRISE CLASS REPORT

With 16 races in the bag of the Sunday series (at the time of writing), thus far 13 of the 30 or so Enterprises at the Club have come out of hibernation, timidly wetting their bottoms in Upper Bittell reservoir.  Most hardy of them is that of Gordon and Rose Padmore whose boat has persuaded them to sail 14 of the 16 races and is therefore currently leading on the points series.  We are all looking forward to seeing the rest of the boats in their summer plumage. on a more regular basis on Sundays.

OPEN MEETING

Barnt Green SC played host to 18 boats at the Enterprise Open on 23rd April as part of the Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails. An overcast day with a veering force 2 north-westerly made Rob Lennox, the OOD’s job difficult but 3 good races were achieved and a very enjoyable day had by all.  There was lots of egg on your class captain’s face for selling the winning boat to the meeting winners some 3 weeks before the event. However, there is no doubt in his mind that the boat would not have won had he been helming it !

In race 1, Jonathan Woodward led from the start until the final lap when an error of judgement saw Jonathan tacking short of the starboard lay line and allowing John Blundell to gain the advantage on starboard at the buoy.  In race 2, John Blundell led from start to finish having correctly picked the port end of the line and having crossed the fleet. The third and trophy race saw Stephen Graham first round the windward mark with Barry Moss second and Jonathan Woodward third.  Jonathan Woodward fought past to lie first for a while but was taken by Stephen Graham on the beat in the final stages of the race.

MAIN RESULTS

1st John & Chris Blundell, Hallamshire (1,1,3),

2nd Stephen Graham & Chessie Saunders, Hollowell (4,3,1),

3rd Jonathan Woodward & Alex Halliwell Reddich (2,2,2),

1st Barnt Green boat Tim Joinson & Kate Brooks  7th place.
