2009 BGSC Enterprise Open meeting report, by Paul Young of MSC.

This combined Midland/Severnside event was the sixth in the 2009 Midland Area Double Chine series sponsored by Speed Sails and was held at Barnt Green SC on Sunday 10th May.

The seventeen boat fleet included visitors from Chester, Northampton, Frampton, Emberton Park, Tamworth, Shustoke, Redditch, Rugby and Midland sailing clubs. The light and variable wind tested the patience of both the competitors and race officer alike.  In the first race Martin and Laurence Davies (Rugby and Daventry SC) led at the first mark followed by Ges Brown and Dennis Swain (Chester SC) in second with Bob Suggitt and Kate Brooks (Barnt Green SC) third and Steve Graham/Chris Blundell (Northampton SC) fourth.

Later on a run Steve and Chris, Bob and Kate and Ges and Dennis lost some ground on the left side of the course allowing Jon Woodward and Alex Halliwell (Redditch SC) to catch up. These five boats then battled constantly. At the finish Bob and Kate were first, Jon and Alex second, Martin and Laurence third, Ges and Dennis fourth with Steve and Chris recovering well to take fifth.

After an excellent lunch from Sally’s Galley, the second race sailed in similar conditions saw three new leaders at the first mark. This time Barry Moss and Julie Moore (Shustoke SC) were first from Jon and Alex in second and Geoff Coxe and Sue Beyon (Frampton on Severn SC) third. On a following run Ges and Dennis went right and pulled through to second behind Jon and Alex. These pairs broke free from the fleet during the next lap. On the final lap Steve and Chris went low on the reach sailing around the outside to gain third just behind the leaders. Ges and Dennis took the lead on this leg closely followed by Jon and Alex and Steve and Chris, these positions were then held to the finish.

As the wind filled in for the start of the third race, opinions were divided about which end of the line to start. Mike Cossey and Donald Pickworth (Tamworth/BGSC) and Martin and Laurence went for the shore end with the rest of the fleet going for the pin end.  Halfway up the beat Mike and Donald and Martin and Laurence were buried but they managed to find extra wind to go round the first mark first and third with Ges and Dennis in second.

Ges and Dennis managed to pass Mike and Donald down the next reach with Bob and Kate, Steve and Chris and Phil Kirk and Ed Higson (Frampton on Severn SC) all in contention. Up the next beat Ges and Dennis managed to pull away, with all the other places up for grabs. Steve and Chris managed to pull ahead of the chasing pack, closely followed by Phil and Ed, Martin and Laurence and Bob and Kate. Mike had an incident at the leeward mark resulting in a capsize with young stand in crew Donald getting wet. The next couple of laps saw Phil and Ed pass Steve and Chris to take second with Steve and Chris third,  Bob and Kate fourth and Martin and Laurence fifth. The wind continued to get up with the race finishing in this order.

Ges Brown thanked everyone at Barnt Green SC for a good day.

2008 Open Meeting incorporating the Midland Area Championship was held on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th April.  An illustrated report by Paul Young and friends with photo's of day two by Robin Brown can be seen here.   You can visit the Enterprise Class "SAILAWAY" website here (to see images from the first day)

Dear Members,  (A message from your Class Captain, dated February 2008)

Since the Duty Rota letter was sent out asking for members to assist with one or more duties at the various Club Class open meetings, the Enterprise Class Open on Sunday 27th April has been upgraded to the Midlands Area event and now is spread over two days.  As a result, while I am grateful for those who have volunteered to help on the Sunday, I would be delighted to hear from any member who can assist on Saturday 26th April, even from anyone who could do both days. You may be an Enterprise sailor who is unable to commit to sailing both days and therefore, be able to help me by volunteering for one or both days.

Please contact me directly on either 01905 774588 or e-mail michaelpickworth@msn.com

Many thanks in advance,     Regards       Mike Pickworth

Enterprise Class Report - Autumn 2007

by retiring Fleet Captain Adrian Savage.

An excellent Summer Series and an excellent year’ sailing.  Once again the Enterprises have acted as an example to the other fleets in leading the way for one design racing.

On the top step of the podium and spraying champagne over the rest of us (hopefully) is Mike Pickworth who has had a cracking season beating your fleet captain into second position with consummate ease.

who sailed to victory in the points series

Gordon & Rose came an uncomfortably close third with our Commodore, Stuart Howe,  in fourth position.  In the handicap, Stuart takes the much loved Transom Trophy with Phil Everard and Caroline Whitehouse taking second and third positions.  I have little doubt that if they had turned up just a little more often, they would have been hard to beat.

Once again, Barnt Green hosted the prestigious Enterprise Association National Under 21 Youth Championships on 8th and  9th September.  12 Boats sailed with 4 from Barnt Green. the numbers depleted by clashes with all the other major youth classes.  The event was won by Andy Ritchie & Arthur Mason for a second year running but not without considerable pressure from Richard Pepperdine/James Askew and Matt Johnson with Rachel Jackson.  This was a light wind event and Barnt Green played its magic tricks with shifts in wind direction and speed so that even careful covering of the opposition often did not pay off and the lead changed many times during the racing.  Well, we did warn them!

The party on Saturday evening was less boisterous because of the absence of the Scottish contingent who had managed to edge themselves and their livers past the age of 21.  I’m so grateful to all those who helped at the event, Bob Suggitt for the race management, Sally in the galley, all who helped with the rescue, bar and OOD duties.  I hope you will all turn out for Mike Pickworth when he asks for help next year.  It’s in my diary.

Once again, Barnt Green is hosting the Midland Enterprise AGM on Sunday the 25th November.  This is an excellent opportunity to test yourselves against the best of the midland Enterprise sailors without having to pack the boat up and trail it to an open meeting.  Afterwards, Sally is providing a lunch, open to all, following which the Midlands area Enterprise sailors will sort out their business. Other important dates are the Club AGM on Wednesday 28th November and of course the Christmas party on Saturday 8th December – Not to be missed!       Regards.  Adrian Savage, Fleet Captain 2006/7
