Bob’s Tuesdays

Latest from Mandy, posted 28/11/2008

Hi Everyone

The forecast for Sunday is pretty awful, so I think it is best if we say now there will be no training on the 30th November.

I want to say thank you to Katie for her help and to Robin for putting the details on the website and well done to all of you who turned up:

Ellie, Saskia, Mollie, Lawrence, Josh, Ed and Chris

Also ESPECIALLY Parents!! Great support - without you it does not happen, believe me, I know.

See you all at Easter if not before.   (Don't forget the Junior Party on 13th December)

Kind Regards

Mandy

(Note, the normal club racing followed by Sally's lunch, then the AGM and finally the prizegiving, all still take place on the 30th)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Everyone,   (Posted 22/11/2008)

I shall not be at the club on Sunday (23rd November) because I am going to a Seminar on being a Race Officer.  I love to keep learning and polishing my skills!

Katie will be at the club though to go through the technique of Running (as in the downwnd leg - not the London Marathon).  The forecast does not look very promising at the moment but keep an eye on it and if it changes for the better please support Katie!

Sunday 30th November also does not look very good weather-wise and also there is the club AGM.  At the moment it looks unlikely that we will be able to train.  BUT - if the weather changes and is after all perfect, I am happy to get Sally to keep my lunch hot and spend some time training.  I'm prepared to be flexible.

Just in case we are not able to meet again next Sunday or the week after, I want to say well done to you all for the work you have put in to your training this autumn.  I should like to mention especially Ellie and Saskia (and Mollie) who have turned up and sailed and have definitely made good progress.  I look forward to seeing all of you in the spring.  Incidently, Ellie and Saskia, there is no reason why you should not join in with club races.  You are quite able to do this now - just pick a day when the wind is not too strong and go for it.  That applies to Lawrence as well.

Meanwhile, have a great Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.

Kind Regards

Mandy

Special Junior training has been taking place as an addendum to the Sunday morning K8's Crew sessions.  Mandy Suggitt has been running them with help from Katie Smith when she can make it.  Following the Frostbite races, starting on Sunday 19th October, it is planned that Mandy should run some Junior training sessions after the end of the second race.  This should be at around 2. pm.  Contact Mandy to discuss if you are interested.  Tel. 0121 445 6550   or  Email

From Mandy......

Following the surge of interest in Junior sailing, especially in the Optimist class at the Junior Helm I suggested running some follow up race training on Sunday mornings. Expecting that the two Katies would be fully occupied with their careers at this time, I volunteered myself. The youngsters and their parents at the
event were canvassed and the response was positive. I have done 3 Sunday mornings so far, the first one was a taster to check the level of ability and interest  and from last week (28th Sept.) Katie Smith has joined me.

Programme

Start Racing – Planned Programme Autumn 2008

Sunday 21st September to Sunday 5th October 2008 inclusive

Sessions will start at 11.00 am (Rigged and ready) and finish around 1:00 pm

Sailing is a weather dependant sport so the programme may have to be modified because of the conditions but the intention is to work on the following topics:

Points of Sailing   -   Upwind sailing   -   Downwind sailing

The course   -   Boat handling   -   Starting   -    Finishing

Preparation including rigging and knots

While looking at these subjects we will take account of outside influences:

The weather   -   The wind forecast   -   Wind shifts and bends   -   Parents   -   Other competitors   -   Rules   -   The venue

You should plan to attend at least 2 sessions
Barnt Green Sailing Club makes a small charge for these sort of coaching courses as a contribution to Club funds of £3.00 per session payable to the Treasurer.

If these sessions are successful there may be an opportunity to continue them from the 19th October, into November.

--------------------------

There is  interest from the children and parents in continuing on Sunday afternoons, after the change of racing timetable to Sunday mornings. (The Frostbite series)

News so far is that Annabel, Saskia, Ellie, Josh, Molly, Ed,Chris and Laurence have all come to at least one session and appeared to enjoy themselves, very much - especially the game of 'Pirates' on the 28th !

On the 5th October the plan is to look at starting (and finishing), practise some starts and have a race to round off. Still 11 o clock start for this one.  Then, on the 12th the club has a work party, an opportunity to put something back into the club.  All members are welcome to come along, in fact, we urge you to!  It is fun and there is a great atmosphere.  Come along around 10 o clock if possible.   There will be no sailing.

Keep an eye on this page for updates for Junior Training Sessions.
