Monday 14th April 2008, Mandys’ Mondays commence. Ladies sailing with Mandy Suggitt instructing.

2007 Autumn 'end of season' report :

Ladies sailing sessions take place each Monday between Easter and the first week in September.   The object of the sessions is to build up the competence and confidence of Ladies who already have had an introduction to sailing. We don’t usually do Bank Holidays but this year the girls decided to have a session without me!  Most girls are now confident to join in with the club racing and we have a lot of smiling faces and girlish laughter!  This year’s plan was to concentrate on boat handling and ‘rule situations’, esp. in terms of incidents at mark roundings.  And we did!  Tacking and gybing on the whistle proved to be useful and a lot of fun!  I think the ‘water at the mark’ rules are now a bit clearer !

The statistics show we sailed on 17 Mondays.  There were 84 sailor attendances, not so many uses of club boats as in previous years (only 5).  Nearly all the regular attendees have their own Laser Radial or 4.7 now and that means we have plenty of club boats available for new people to come and join us. I recorded the highest attendance figure at 14 but Flos and Karen each came 12 times.  Our rescue person (a man! shhh) Kris was there on 13 occasions including 3 Mondays when I could not be there! Another important statistic, our weekly attendance averaged 6 sailors (up on last year). We now have a standby rescue person in Alison’s husband who likes motor boats!  A few ladies were not able to come back this year but we have been lucky to welcome new ones, Helen Jones, Helen Pennock and also Nicki.

The result of the traditional Final race was Karen 1st, Sarah 2nd, Pat 3rd, Flos 4th, ,Pauline 5th, Nicki 6th, Alison 7th and Helen (Pennock) 8th.  Karen brought delicious homemade chocolate cake which went down very well. The prizes, of course, were chocolate!

This report filed by Mandy on 4th September 2007 following the last Monday sailing session

"Our tradition is to have a race on the final evening with chocolate for prizes - naturally."

The race was won by Karen Millington seen in this photo' streaking away into the lead just seconds after the start.  The other finishers in order were:
Sarah Bown, Pat Lewis, Flos Beckett, Nicki, Alison and Helen Pennock.

The finale of the Monday evenings will be Monday 10th Sept.,  when "we plan to go out for a meal to celebrate.  I shall compile some statistics and a report about Ladies Mondays, when I have a minute! "

Kind regards             Mandy

Some photos were taken on the last night of Ladies Mondays which will be inserted into this page shortly.

Ladies (Mandy’s) Mondays Summer 2007 early season report

Monday evenings are going ahead as in the previous 3 years and we have already had 5 sessions so far. We get down to the Sailing Club, as soon as we can make it after work, rig boats and launch the small rib. So far Pauline Christmas, Flos Beckett, Karen Millington, Sarah Bown, Helen Farquharson, Helen Jones Alison (nee Smith), Sally Ellis and Helen Pennock have sailed. With Kristiaan on rescue and myself, and Gemma coaching, we are beginning to make an impression on windshifts, roll tacking, estimating 2 boat lengths and starting. We are also coping better with windy and gusty conditions.

Topics for future evenings include a slalom course, better mark rounding tactics and of course the rules.  Anyone who already has RYA Level 1 or 2 or equivalent and wants to improve their sailing skills, even if it's just practising rigging and launching - come and join us.  Held every week throughout the summer - turn up between 6.30 / 7.00 p.m. to learn and practise SAILING AND RACING SKILLS

Archive....The Autumn 2006 report.

The highlight of Ladies Mondays is ‘The Dinner’. This has become something of a tradition as we celebrate the completion of another successful series. The meal this year was at the Mekong Thai restaurant in Bromsgrove and I really enjoyed it.  Thanks very much to all of you who came along. The sailing sessions take place each Monday between Easter and the first week in September.   The object of the sessions is to build up the competence and confidence of Ladies who already have had an introduction to sailing.  The success is measured in the smiling faces and sounds of laughter across the water and in the increasing numbers of girls sailing in the club races.

This year the plan was to start team racing.  And we did!  The team racing purists might not have recognised it, as teams made up of mixtures of Laser Radials, 4.7’s and Picos make for a challenging but somewhat uneven competition!

The statistics show we sailed on 17 Mondays.  There were 90 sailor attendances, 112 uses of boats.  I recorded the highest attendance figure at 13 but Flos and Karen each came 12 times.  Our stalwart rescue person (a man! shhh) Kris was there on ten occasions, so I could sail too!  Once there was just one sailor, Emily who sailed in the pouring rain!  But otherwise there were at least 4 and on the first and last Mondays there were 9! Alison came 9 times altogether in spite of her wedding preparations – well done! Charlotte Meyer and Sophie Christmas came 5 times each and Helen and Stephanie put in the occasional appearance – they have both done a lot of other sailing this year. I was glad to see the two Katie’s as well.

The result of the race on the final day was Karen 1st, Flos 2nd, Pat 3rd, Pauline 4th, Sophie 5th and Emily 6th.  Kelsey finished in front but was disqualified for going too fast and Sarah had an incident and failed to do her penalty turns so was DSQ as well.  The prizes of course are chocolate!  As you can tell we are fairly laid back but with a serious motive.  The proof of the pudding as they say…….. and the proof is that Sarah has won the 4.7 club series.

As all the best authors say, thank you to my family who stood in for me on occasions. We shall start again next year on about the 16th April and the slogan for the year is ‘Bring a friend’, as we want to expand our group.
