Barnt Green Sailing Club - HANDICAP NON TRAPEZE FLEET.

2011 update, we are still encouraging members to move to or new members to join with a boat within this PY range.  Please note the in 2010 the PY number for the RS200 was changed to 1057 (from 1059) so we have adjusted the PY range of our handicap fleet accordingly. In 2011 the range is 1057 to 1099

The following text is archive material from 2008 onwards but describes the situation with regard to this fleet well enough in 2011 with the above mentioned adjustment.

In 2008 we decided to introduce a 2 man handicap fleet with PY between 1057 and 1099, the intention being to encourage RS200 sailing into the club.  The rationale behind the change is that we are always looking out for new members, but some are put off joining by our single class racing with boats that were designed 40-50 years ago. (Sorry Lasers 37 years ago).  The present fleets will continue unchanged.  The new class will initially start with the Larks until it has gained sufficient numbers to warrant its own start.  We hope that the new class will eventually settle into a choice of one type of modern asymmetric rig style of boat such as the RS200 (our preferred choice) however, initially we are open to other choices within the PY parameters 1057 to 1099.      Brian Allen. More information follows below to offer guidance to those considering being at the forefront of asymmetric sailing at Barnt Green.  The fleet will be initiated on a trial basis and we are hopeful for rapid development of this exciting new venture for the club.  For further information please contact the Commodore or the Vice Commodore.  Their details can be found here

Introduction of the RS200 class to our Club

An article by Gordon Padmore, Commodore 2010/2011

This season, (2008) we are planning to introduce the RS200 class of boat, initially on a handicap basis only, as a way of encouraging new members into the Club who either possess an RS200 and wish to sail more locally, or, are introduced into sailing and hope to purchase a new design of boat with a view to using it on a regular basis.

This decision has been reached, as we see the need to offer a choice of boats for both helm and crew to sail, and due in recent years, to the reduction in competitive racing in the Lark class.

By offering this up to date class of two person boat which is of similar speed to the Lark (PY1073), the RS200 (PY1057) we believe, will well suit our type of water.  (PY changed in 2010 from 1059 to 1057)

In introducing the RS200 Class to the Club on a handicap basis only, which will start each race at the same time as the Larks and hopefully build up into a fleet in its own right, we would stress that it is the preferred but not necessarily exclusive design of boat to be considered, as our main criteria is for a modern style of asymmetric 2 person non trapeze boat in the Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) range of 1057 to 1099.

We have been in contact with Andy Weeden of Purple Marine, who is our nearest agent in the Midlands, to arrange a weekend at the end of April / early May for two boats to be brought to the Club and for members to test them out on our own waters. Alternatively, if you cannot wait until then, you can make arrangements through RS Racing, to visit Burghfield S.C and try the boats out there. However, we shall expect a report, from anybody who does, for our own website!

We trust members will consider this new class to be a positive move for both the Club membership and for sailing at the Club in general, and that you will embrace the change which we hope will take a minimal period of time to become established.

For those interested, I have obtained a quantity of brochures with the specification details of the RS200 together with the prices and would be pleased to forward them on to you. Alternatively, visit the websites: www.RSsailing.com   or   www.purplemarine.com

If there are any members considering changing their boats for an RS200, I would be interested to know, as I am sure there will be quantity discounts available!

Remember, for a boat to fit the criteria of our new fleet it must be a two person, non trapeze PY 1057 to 1099  (2011 update 1057 to 1099)
