Fleets

Our racing is all either handicap or pursuit racing which means any boat can compete evenly and finish times are adjusted according to how fast each boat should be. There are several classes of dinghy which are popular at Barnt Green and by sailing one of these established classes you will enjoy closer racing and of course tips and advice from fellow sailors when you get off the water.

Enterprise

A 4m long, two person sailing dinghy with two light blue sails. Ideal combined crew weight is 120-140kg. There are now more than 23400 registered boats. The class has attracted some of the biggest names in sailing and continues to do so attracted by quality racing and high turnouts for all abilities and ages.

K1

A one person keeled hiking dinghy for single-handed sailing.

Lark

A two person dinghy similar to the enterprise but with a spinnaker sail to keep more skilled crews busy.

Laser, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7

The olympic single-hander class. Due to its simple design and performance there are now >200,000 boats worldwide. Its available with three rigs to suit different size sailors. Laser standard (full rig) for 74-86kg (ideally 78-83kg), Laser radial for 58-75kg (ideally 65-70kg) and Laser 4.7 for 40-58kg (ideally 50-54kg).

The boat provides a three sail experience where the helm and the crew must work together as a team to obtain the best results.

Optimist

A small, single-handed dinghy that most of our juniors start in. Many sailors continue to race them up to 15 years old / 55kg. The Optimist is the biggest youth racing class in the world. At the 2016 Olympics at least 85% of the boat skippers were former Optimist sailors.
